Elizabeth McGowan

Robert Sterling Clark Professor of Art, Emerita

We interviewed several colleagues and former students for this citation. Here is how they described you.

Regarding your personal qualities: “Enthusiastic.” “Poetic.” “Embracing and intimate and wry and witty all at the same time.”

Regarding the quality of your mind: “A truly curious intellectual.” “She seems to live in a state of constant wonder and amazement.”

In reference to your teaching: “The great care and attention she shows her students helps explain why they consistently achieve great things beyond Williams. … Her impact cannot be understated.”

Perhaps the most vivid testament goes beyond words: the tattoo that one former student got in honor of your course on classical art.

From student conversations in your dining room to study sites in Greece, Rome and Sicily, you create inspirational learning experiences everywhere you go. During the pandemic, you even turned the slopes of Mount Greylock into a classroom, leading hikes while discussing classical Roman sculpture. “It was so exciting to try and keep up with her, physically and intellectually,” one of the student-hikers said.

Here is how we would describe you: Brilliant art historian. Loving teacher. Creative spirit. And the very soul of a Williams faculty member.

I hereby declare you the Robert Sterling Clark Professor of Art, Emerita, entitled to all the rights, honors and privileges appertaining thereto.
